Speed Learner

The past few nights have been exhausting. My sleeping-through-the-night baby is now up at least twice before we get up for the day. Even when he's sleeping, he's not peaceful. He's banging on the sides of the bassinet or kicking his swaddle off or rattling dog-man. They say that babies regress in their sleeping habits when they're about to learn a new skill, because they're up all night thinking about how to do whatever it is they're about to learn. Well, that's most definitely holding up to be true around here. He wants to get up at five in the morning because he can't wait another couple hours to practice his new tricks. He won't nap, either. Yesterday and today I've felt like I remember feeling when he was a newborn - like I'm going to starve to death and the laundry is going to be overflowing out onto the porch if he doesn't just nap. He's just too busy to care that his eyes are red and puffy and he's pretty much delirious.

Mason's decided to just go ahead and learn everything at once. I've been wondering when he was going to roll, well, he's been rolling really well from back to belly for a couple of days now. He still isn't doing belly to back, but I think he just wanted to get the harder one out of the way first. I'm sure the other way will happen soon enough. He's also sitting for a couple seconds without any help... last night he must have sat, using his hands like a little tripod, for a good minute on his own.

When he's on his belly, he's doing a couple cool new tricks: the airplane and the inch worm. The airplane is when he lifts his arms and legs up and is just kind of balancing on his belly. What we're calling the "inch worm" is the funniest thing I've ever seen. He lays on his belly and digs his knees into the carpet until his little butt is sticking up in the air. Then he puts his butt down and he actually scoots forward a little. He's mobile! I mean, it'd probably take him three days to get across the living room, but still, my baby moved the first inches he's ever moved by himself. He's officially mobile.

Seriously, these things were all learned just last night. That's how fast this stuff can happen.
